Ultimap: Find Ultimate Anywhere

Ultimap Frequently Asked Questions

  1. The Ultimap isn't working. Can you help?

Almost certainly not. The Ultimap uses the Google Maps API to display its maps. This relies heavily on web technologies, particularly Javascript and XML (a.k.a. AJAX). If the ultimap doesn't work for you, it's almost certainly because Google Maps isn't supported by your browser. You can check the system requirements for Google Maps.

You can still search the Ultimap and view the results with any browser, although you obviously won't be able to map them. You can even register on the Ultimap without the map, provided you know your latitiude and longitude.

  2. Can you help me find something that's not on the Ultimap?

Sorry, but I don't even know what is on the ultimap, much less what's not. Spread the word and eventually maybe we'll have info from everywhere.

  3. Does the Ultimap use cookies?

If you check the Remember my starting location box on the home page, the Ultimap will set a cookie to let it remember your selection. That's all.

  4. Why do `bunches of balloons' appear on the Ultimap?

This icon means there are too many entries in that neighborhood to display individually. Zoom in and they will be replaced by the individual icons. You might also try searching instead of browsing.

  5. What's with all these ancient Ultimap entries with `clock' icons?

These entries are from the original incarnation of the ultimap. Since we didn't collect precise location coordinates back then, the positions of the icons were chosen based on geocoding the original address information. If you know one of these entries is out-of-date, please feel free to update it (and choose a new icon).

  6. Why can anyone edit or delete anybody else's Ultimap entry?

It's called being part of a community: I respect your stuff and you respect mine. Besides, life is too short to deal with logins and passwords and all that just to find some ultimate. Comment spammers and script kiddies please don't prove me wrong on this one...

  7. Is there an RSS feed for the Ultimap?

    Yes: http://www.ultimap.org/latest

  8. Can I see this Ultimap information in Google Earth?

Yes you can. Individual entries have a link that will produce a KML file that you can load into Google Earth. There is also a KML feed containing the entire contents of the Ultimap, updated as necessary:
